Interesting & Personal: Interview with Burgi about her swimming courses

For many years, Burgi has run our children's club and has a lot of experience. With lots of love and care she enjoys teaching the children to swim.

What is most important in the initial phase?
A lot of patience is necessary when children are afraid, most importantly the children must have fun in learning to swim.

How do you learn to enjoy swimming?
Playful exercises. The child forgets that it is in a swim-course. For example, we do the diamond dive, which is used to consciously blow out the air under water or bow-swimming helps the children to observethe swimming movements. The hit is the water rescue game. Children have to save animals from the water withthe aid of swimming boards. This is aimed to improve the correct foot technique.

How do you make the transition from swimming with swimming aids to free swimming?
First, the movements must be automated and only then, is it very important from my experience, that the children have to decide for themselves when they feel safe enough to let the air out of their swimming aids and swim freely. They should feel happy with their first free floats.

Is there a difference between small children aged 1-3 years and children aged 5 and above?
Toddlers automatically make the frog movement necessary for swimming. If you exercise and strengthen this movement, it will be much easier for the childin later swimming courses, since this movement will not have to be learnt again.

All about the swimming course!
I prefer small groups (3 to 6 children). This has the following advantages: I can innovate each child individually, as well as teach beginners and advanced simultaneously, so children can start the course daily. As children are ambitious, they look at the advanced children and try to copy them. If necessary, the parents can join the children at their first attempts at swimming. Subsequently it is better without parents, as children concentrate more on the swimming and playful exercises.

Are there "do's and don’ts for swimming?
If parents swim alone with the childrenin the learning phase, they sometimes make the mistake of being too ambitious and taking the children out of the swimming aids too quickly. If the parents do the “dry” exercises with the children, they learn to swim much faster, the exercises are reinforced.
